Flyball Handler: Ellen Schofield

How it all began…

Ellen says, “I have always loved the speed and the team aspect of flyball and dabbled occasionally through the Young Kennel Club as a teenager.

Over the years we have seen dogs and people come and go, as the sport has grown in East Anglia, with many of the teams now in existence being set up by people who started with us.

I have trained many dogs over the years but Tally, my 12 years old Cocker, has to have been one of the best in her time and helped showcase the world that working Cockers excelled at this sport the way they do in agility.

I have had many Border Collies over my time but 3.5 years ago I took the plunge and bought my first purpose-bred flyball dog, a sports dog from a Border Collie mum put to an imported American sports mix. He has truly excelled in the sport as he was bred to do, and at only 3 years old is currently one of the fastest height dogs in the world!”

Ellen owns 9 dogs…

• 4 Working Cockers – Tally, Remus, Bella & Jake

• 1 Labrador – Charlie

• 1 Miniature American Shepherd – Finnick

• 2 Border Collies – Lexey & Elsa

• 1 Sports Mix – Kylo

Ellen’s biggest/most memorable success?

“For me personally, it must be winning our divisions in 2013 at the British Championships one weekend and then the same team taking the divisional win a week later at the European Championships, using Tally as our height dogs at both events. Qualifying for Crufts 2019 with my Border Collie Lexey is probably a close 2nd, followed by all the achievements my team have accomplished.”

Ellen’s long list of fantastic successes also include:

• 2011 European Flyball Champion (Div 6)

• 2013 British Flyball Champion (Div 4)

• 2013 European Flyball Champion (Div 4)

• 2015 British Flyball Champion (Div 5)

• 2017 European Flyball Champion (Div 4)

• 2018 British Flyball Champion (Div 2)

• Reached Grade 7 in agility

• Qualified for the Olympia semis at the KCAI

Not forgetting Kylo …

“Kylo has only just started to compete in flyball thanks to covid, but his personal best time (PB) in 3.5s over his own height of 10” and he ran in our current club record breaking team back in October at his 3rd ever comp where the team posted a 15.78s. We hope to go much faster in the very near future.”

When not competing…

Ellen currently works at the Kennel Club Genetics Centre as their Bioinformatician – and says that between that and the team there isn’t much time for anything else these days.

Selling CSJ

Ellen passes prospective clients to Robin Pearson in Prickwillow.

“Kylo has been fed on CSJ Complete Tripe since the day he came home from his breeder. It suits him and provides him with plenty of energy to do our sport. What I love though is that it contains Glucosamine and Green Lipped Mussel which help support and protect his joints as well.”
